Jan Rowland Biography

Australian born, Jan Rowland is primarily a painter now but was formally a ceramicist. She gained her BFA from Newcastle School of Art and Newcastle University (Australia) then continued with ceramic studies for two years at Canberra School of Art.
She taught High School students for twelve years before marrying a US Foreign Service Officer and taking off around the world, however leaving her potters wheel in Australia.

Currently she is a resident artist at City Line studios attached to Friendship Heights Village Center, MD and previously was at Glen Echo Park as a resident artist for three years. Her visual language is a combination of realistic and abstract images. Her primary interest is not representation; in fact she avoids too much realism and likes to experiment by throwing paint over the canvas, dabbing out with tissue and lifting shapes with blotting paper in order to connect with the process. Rowland likes the fleeting images of reflections and the chance effects of light. She loves the multi-layered, transparent images reflected in glass, water or any shiney object. Painting thus becomes a mass of spur of the moment personal decisions, with colored puddles of paint being pushed around the canvas and multi layered monoprints being used. The image and process become welded into one with considerable risk and excitement.

For Jan Rowland being creative is always a journey of discovery and she gains much pleasure from painting and drawing.
